  • i saw joan of arc in portland

when they took your body down, it was
    smeared black on the palms
    the undistinguished, forgotten sin of
    difference
reduced to the ash of a flaming pyre

    transcendent death carried you
with a gilded caress to new shores
in the silken, still fluttering of a brass flag
and a sword on your hip

did they know you would outlive them all?
